Wisteria Flowers in Harmony with Shrine Grounds in Spring

If you visit Kameido Tenjin Shrine, you can see elegant vermilion arched bridges over Shinjiike pond in the shrine grounds.

When you go to Main Hall from Shrine Gate, you will cross three vermilion bridges over the pond. The first larger arched bridge (Otokobashi) represents past, the second flat bridge represents present, and the third smaller arched bridge (Onnabashi) near a beautiful lantern like a bridge of koto represents future. You can find turtles and carps in the pond.

This shrine enshrines Michizane Sugawara (845-903), the god of learning, and ancestors of the Sugawara Family. There are the statue of Michizane Sugawara at his age of five and the statue of cow. It is one of three major Edo Tenjin Shrines along with Yushima Tenjin Shrine and Yabo Tenmangu, while there are various views.

Also, there are some monuments including "Uso" monument and "Haiku" monument of Basho Matsuo (1644-1694).

Moreover, you can see Main Hall and Tokyo Skytree® simultaneously from the shrine ground. It is collaboration between "tradition" and "modern" in Tokyo.

This shrine is widely recognized as one of the best places in Tokyo to see wisteria flowers.

Historically, Hiroshige Utagawa (1797-1858) drew wisteria flowers and a vermilion arched bridge over Shinjiike pond in "Kameido Tenjin Keidai" from One Hundred Famous Views of Edo in Edo Period (1603-1867).

"Wisteria Festival" is held in spring. You can see beautiful scenery that wisteria flowers harmonize with the shrine grounds including Shinjiike pond and arched bridges around late April, while the high time of wisteria flowers is short, and the appearance of its flowers changes day by day.

There are a lot of wisteria trellis in the shrine grounds. You can see a wide variety of sceneries from different places. In particular, from a larger vermilion arched bridge (Otokobashi), you can see wonderful scenery of wisterial flowers near a vermilion flat bridge in front of a smaller arched bridge (Onnabashi) and main shrine hall. During Wisteria Festival, the shrine grounds have a lively atmosphere because of a lot of open-air stalls and azalea flowers.

In addition to wisteria flowers, this shrine is famous for plum blossoms in late winter, and "Plum Festival" is held from late winter to early spring. Moreover, "Chrysanthemum Festival" is held in late autumn.

Otoriishinyu Sugawara, decendant of Michizane Sugawara, established this shrine in 1662. It is a small shrine at commercial area in Kameido, Koto City, Tokyo. Its nearest station is Kameido station.
