Flower Garden that has Flowering Plants from Season to Season

If you visit Mukojima-Hyakkaen Gardens, you can see a wide variety of flowering plants.

This flower garden is selected as Place of Scenic Beauty of Japan and Place of Historical Site of Japan.

It is famous for plum blossoms, as it used to be called "Shin Ume Yashiki," meaning new plum residence. At present, there are about 20 kinds of plum trees. You can appreciate white and red plum blossoms during the high season. "Plum Festival" is held from late winter to early spring.

Also, bush clover is well-known about this flower garden. You can pass through the slightly curved 30-meter tunnel of bush clover. "Bush Clover Festival" is held in early autumn.

Historically, Kikuu Sawara (1764-1831), an antiques dealer, made this flower garden around 1804 during Edo Period (1603-1867), receiving the cooperation of literati including Nanpo Ota (1749-1823), a comic tanka writer, and Hoitsu Sakai (1761-1828), a painter.

There are stone monuments of literati such as Basho Matsuo (1644-1694). Also, "Fukurokuju," one of 7 Fortune Gods, is enshrined.

Mukojima-Hyakkaen Gardens is very different from Japanese circuit gardens such as Koishikawa Korakuen Gardens, Rikugien Gardens, and Kyu-Shiba-Rikyu Gardens. This flower garden is almost flat, while Japanese circuit gardens have uphill and downhill areas around a pond. It seems that this garden has a calm atmosphere partly because of a wide variety of flowers and trees on a flat land.

For your information, you will be able to see Tokyo Skytree® from this flower garden. It is a symbolic view of "tradition" and "modern."

It opened in 1939. It is a small public garden of Tokyo Metropolis at residential area in Higashi-Mukojima, Sumida City, Tokyo. Its nearest station is Higashi-Mukojima Station.
