One of a few existing buildings in Japan designed by Frank Lloyd Wright

If you visit Jiyu Gakuen Myonichikan, you can see a beautiful school building of Jiyu Gakuen.

It was built in 1921. Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) designed it because he emphasized with the educational principles by founders of Jiyu Gakuen, Motoko Hani (1880-1955) and Yoshikazu Hani (1873-1957). It is selected as Important Cultural Property of Japan, and classrooms and dining hall are used under working preservation.

This building has a symmetric appearance with lounge in the center. It was designed as a low-rise plairie-style building that harmonized with grounds on the basis of organic architecture, which is different from functionalism and rationalism. It has comfortable space inside. Apparently, it is stable due to the same height of the 1st floor between inside and outside, and is spacious due to the mountain-shape ceiling inside the building.

It is impressive to see pictures of classrooms during the starting period of Jiyu Gakuen In "Fujin-no-Tomo Company Professor Hani memorial Exhibition Room." It is also wonderful to see pictures of architectural buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in "Mini Wright Museum." There are four cherry trees at the school ground in front of Myonichikan.

Also, there is a wonderful auditorium designed by Arata Endo (1889-1951). The repair work is being carried out in the auditorium from October 2014 to March 2017.

It opened in 1921. It is a middle-sized private school building at residential area in Nishi-Ikebukuro, Toshima City, Tokyo. Its nearest station is Ikebukuro station.
