Contemporary art by great artist who declined the Order of Culture

If you visit Kumagai Morikazu Art Museum, you can see art works by Morikazu Kumagai (1880-1977).

It is an art museum of contemporary art. Special exhibition, project exhibiton, and regular exhibition are held. There are regular exhibition rooms at the 1st and the 2nd floors and a gallery at the 3rd floor. It has an artistic atmosphere that ants that Morikazu Kumagai drew are designed on the wall of this museum building. Also, a tree of Japanese zelkova is planted near the entrance.

This museum shows his art works including drawing and ink painting. The drawing during his mature period is simple like picture letters. It is wonderful that the essence is concretely described by simple outline and color. He drew common daily themes. It is impressive that many of his art works are drawn on small board. Also, the chello that he actually played and the picture of the scene that he played the chello are displayed.

"The 29th Anniversary of Kumagai Morikazu Art Museum" (from May 16, 2014 (Friday) to June 22, 2014 (Sunday)) was the special exhibition. It was enjoyable to see his art works including "Swallowtail Butterfly" and "White Cat." Also, it was impressive to see his artistic expression in one of his masterpieces called "Sunset." It was great to see that the atmosphere of summer was expressed with simple lines and color in "Summer."

It opened in 1985 as a private art museum at the site of house that Morikazu Kumagai lived in. It became a public art museum of Toshima City in 2007.

It is a small art museum at residential area in Kanamecho, Toshima City, Tokyo. Its nearest station is Kanamecho station.

For your information, there is Morikazu Kumagai Memorial Gallery in Nakatsugawa City, Gifu Prefecture.
