Garden that has western garden as well as Japanese garden
If you visit Kyu-Furukawa Gardens, you can see not only Japanese garden but also Western garden.
This garden was made in 1919 during Taisho period (1912-1926), when Toranosuke Furukawa (1887-1940) was the third president of Furukawa Group. It is selected as Place of Scenic Beauty of Japan.
After you pass the entrance, you will see Western-style House and Western garden that Josiah Conder (1852-1920) designed. The Western garden consists of French Formal Garden and Italian Renaissance Garden. For your information, Josiah Conder also designed a British-style house in Kyu-Iwasaki-Tei Gardens.
From the observatory near the Western-style House, you will be able to see the magnificent view of Japanese circuit garden that Jihei Ogawa (1860-1933) made in the downhill area. Thare is a large stone lantern around a Shinjiike pond. The sound of water from Otaki Fall has a Japanese atmosphere.
This garden is famous for rose flowers in the Western garden like Jindai Botanical Gardens and Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden. You can see rose flowers twice a year, spring and autumn. "Spring Rose Festival" is held from late spring to early summer, and "Autumn Rose Festival" is held in the middle of autumn. In particular, opening hours are extended, thanks to "the Lighten-Up of Spring Rose Flowers and Western-style House" for several days of "Spring Rose Festival."
Also, you will be able to see cherry blossoms around Western-style House in spring and colored leaves of autumn around Japanese garden from late autumn to early winter.
As pay option, you can participate in the tour to see inside Western-style House, while it is necessary to apply in advance by reply postal card as a general rule. Also, matcha green tea is available at a tea house in spring and autumn.
It opened in 1956. It is a public garden of Tokyo Metropolis in Nishigahara, Kita City, Tokyo. Its nearest station is Nishigahara station and so on.
