Daimyo Garden that has wonderful landscape from Fujishiro-Toge Pass

If you visit Rikugien Gardens, you can see wonderful scenery of Japanese Daimyo garden.

Historically, Yoshiyasu Yanagisawa (1658-1714), a domain lord of Kawagoe, who is a Sobayonin officer under Tsunayoshi Tokugawa (1646-1709), the 5th shogun of Tokugawa Shogunate, made it in 1702 in Edo period (1603-1867).

Also, it used to be Komagome villa of old Iwasaki Family, while Kyu-Iwasaki-Tei Gardens was their main residence, Kiyosumi Gardens was their Fukagawa villa and Tonogayato Gardens was their Tonogayato villa.

This garden is selected as Special Place of Scenic Beauty of Japan. It is widely recognized as one of the best gardens in Japan, along with Koishikawa Korakuen Gardens.

This is a Japanese circuit garden that reflects a motif of Kishu Wakayama area. Walking around Great Pond, you will be able to view the changing scenery. In particular, you can look over the spacious stereoscopic landscape of Great Pond and its surrounding area from Fujishiro-Toge Pass (35-meter high) due to wide open grass area. This panorama looks natural partly due to wooden piles at the shore of the Great Pond.

Also, you can look at the scenery of Great Pond and Horai Island from Deshio-no-Minato at the shore. You can see wide sky as trees hide most buildings behind.

It is famous for a weeping cherry blossom. This cherry tree is about 15-meter high and about 20-meter wide near the Uchiniwa-Daimon Gate. The high season is in sometime around from late March to early April, while it changes according to weather conditions. For your information, the weeping cherry blossom viewing at this garden is very different from cherry blossom viewings at Ueno Onshi Park.

Opening Hour is extended during events in spring and late autumn during special events, and you can see the night scenery of this garden during special events in spring and late autumn. "Lighting-Up of Weeping Cherry Blossoms and Japanese Daimyo Garden" is held in spring, and "Lighting-Up of Colored Leaves of Autumn and Japanese Daimyo Garden" is held in late autumn.

It opened in 1938. It is a middle-sized public garden of Tokyo Metropolis at commercial area in Hon-Komagome, Bunkyo City, Tokyo. Its nearest station is Komagome station.
