Center of transportation with Japanese Starting Milestone

If you visit Nihonbashi Bridge, you can see Japanese Starting Milestone as the center of transportation.

It is a stone bridge over Nihonbashi River that is separeted from Kandagawa River and is merged with Sumidagawa River. It is selected as Important Cultural Property of Japan.

Historically, it was the starting milestone of five main expressway in Edo period (1603-1867). It has played an important role as the center of Tokyo. It is unique that metropolitan expressway is over Nihonbashi Bridge, while there are various views.

Nihonbashi area has been developing. There are long-established shops such as Mitsukoshi Department Store and the latest commercial complex facilities such as Koredo Nihonbashi. It is also possible to ride on a sightseeing boat from Nihonbashi boat stop to Sumida River through Nihonbashi River.

It is drawn in various kinds of Ukiyo-e. Also, it is possible to cross the replicated Nihonbashi Bridge in Edo period at Edo-Tokyo Museum. It is interesting that it is a wooden bridge.

The first Nihonbashi Bridge was constructed in 1603. The present Nihonbashi Bridge was built in 1911.

It is a small national bridge at commercial area in Nihonbashi, Chuo City, Tokyo. Its nearest station is Nihonbashi station.
