1: to see Sanno Festival (festival days only)

Shrine with wonderful ceiling pictures at Main Hall

If you visit Hie Jinja Shrine, you can see "Sanno Torii Gateway."

It has a unique shape of triangular roof like a mountain because this shrine enshrines "Oyamakuhi-no-kami," the god of Hiezan Mountain.

This shrine is famous for Sanno Festival. With Gion Festival of Kyoto Yasaka Shrine and Tenjin Festival of Osaka Tenmangu Shrine, it is recognized as one of three major festivals in Japan, while there are various views. Also, with Kanda Festival of Kanda Myojin Shrine and Fukagawa Hachiman Festival of Fukagawa Hachimangu Shrine, it is recognized as one of three major festivals in Tokyo, while there are various views.

Historically, this shrine was constructed in Kamakura period (1185-1333). Dokan Ota (1432-1486) asked Kawagoe Hie Shrine for divided spirits of deity in order to construct Edo castle in 1478. Ieyasu Tokugawa (1542-1616) came to Edo (Tokyo) in 1590 during Azuchi Momoyama Period (1573-1603) and this shrine became the guardian god of Edo castle.

Its shrine grounds consist of shrine gate, main hall and so on. You can see brilliant red pillars of shrine gate and main hall. Also, ceiling pictures of flowers at main hall are beautiful like Japanese art works.

It moved to the present place in 1659. It is a small shrine at commercial area in Nagatacho, Chiyoda City, Tokyo. Its nearest station is Tameike-Sanno Station.
