Oldest Private Art Museum in Japan founded by Kihachiro Okura

If you visit Okura Shukokan, you can see oriental art works.

It is an art museum of oriental art. It has Okura Collection in Hotel Okura Tokyo.

It consists of about 2,500 art works of various categories in the field of oriental art. It includes three National Treasuries of Japan, and 13 Important Cultural Properties of Japan. "Cherry Blossoms at Night" drawn by Taikan Yokoyama (1868-1958) is one of Okura Collection items. Samantabhadra Riding on Elephant, one of the national treaturies in Okura Shukokan, is reguarly exhibited.

Also, the architectural building that has high ceiling with a classic Chinese style is a registered tangible cultural property. The works of art are exhibited in the 1st and the 2nd floor of the architectural building and outside space.

"The Finest of Okura Collection Ⅲ -Artifact Story: What Beauty and Skill Say-" (from January 2, 2014 (Thursday) to March 30, 2014 (Sunday)) was collection exhibition. A lot of excellent works of art including "Hexagonal Dish with Design of Jurojin, God of Longevity" important cultural property, design by Korin Ogata (1658-1716) and ceramic art by Kanzan Ogata (1663-1743) were exhibited. Incense sets and Noh costumes were also wonderful.

It opened in 1917 as the first private art museum in Japan. It is a small private art museum at commercial area in Toranomon, Minato City, Tokyo. Its nearest station is Kamiyacho station and so on.

Necessary Time
It is estimated that it is 1 hour in a regular pace, 30 minutes in a hurried pace, and 1.5 hours in a slow pace.

Opening Hour
It opens from 10:00 to 16:30 (last entry: 16:00).

Closed Day
It is closed every Monday, year-end and new year holiday, and change-of-exhibition periods. In case that Monday is either national holiday or substitute holiday, this museum opens on Monday. Also, closed days may be changed.

Admissions Fee
It is different between Collection Exhibition and Special Exhibition. In case of Collection Exhibition, it is 800-yen for adults, 500-yen for those aged 65 and over, 500-yen for high school and university students. It is free for elementary school and junior high school students. In case of Special Exhibition, it is 1,000-yen for adults, 800-yen for those aged 65 and over, 800-yen for high school and university students. It is free for elementary school and junior high school students.

Access
It takes about 7 minutes from Kamiyacho Station on foot. It is also accessible from Roppongi-Ichome Station.
