Specialized art museum of Ukiyo-e that has a Japanese atmosphere

If you visit Ota Memorial Museum of Art, you can see Ukiyo-e works according to the theme of exhibition.

It is a specialized art museum of Ukiyo-e. It has Ota Collection by the 5th Seizo Ota (1893-1977) that consists of more than 14,000 Ukiyo-e works. Special exhibitions and Regular exhibitions are held. Basically, Ukiyo-e works are usually changed month by month. The last few days of months are often closed due to the change of exhibitions.

It consists of two exhibition rooms at the 1st and the 2nd floors. At the 1st floor, it is wonderful to stay with a stone lantern and dry landscape garden. It is also impressive that it has a tatami mat area in a part of the exhibition room at the 1st floor, where it is necessary to take off shoes.

At the 2nd floor, the exhibition room has a calm atmosphere with wooden ceiling and exhibition cases.

"Hiroshige Blue: Blue Attracted the World" (from April 1, 2014 (Tuesday) to May 28, 2014 (Wednesday)) was a wonderful exhibition that a lot of art works of Hiroshige Utagawa (1797-1858) including "Full Moon at Takanawa" from Famous Places of the Eastern Capital were displayed. In particular, it was impressive to see a snowy landscape in "Lumberyard at Kiba" from One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. Also, it was overwhelming to see dynamic whirling waves in "Whirlpool at Naruto in Awa Province" from Famous Places in Sixty-Odd Provinces. It was great to see good old Japanese landscape in art works including "Numazu" from Thirty-Six Stations of the Tokaido. Also, it was interesting to see the tools to complete Ukiyo-e.

It opened in 1980. It is a small private art museum at commercial area in Harajuku, Shibuya City, Tokyo. Its nearest station is Meiji-Jingumae station.
