Art Museum of oriental art that has Genji Monogatari Emaki

If you visit the Gotoh Museum, you can see oriental art works.

It is an art museum of oriental art. This museum has National Treasures of Japan including "Genji Monogatari Emaki" and "Murasaki Shikibu Nikki Emaki."

It has about 5,000 items including 5 National Treasures of Japan and 50 Important Cultural Properties of Japan. It is comfortable to see art works in refined exhibition rooms with black as base color. It is possible to walk around its garden with slope next to its art museum building. Special exhibition and collection exhibition are held.

"Special exhibition: Koetsu -Momoyama Classics-" (from October 26, 2013 (Saturday) to December 1, 2013 (Sunday)) was a wonderful exhibition to display many masterpieces by Koetsu Honami (1558-1637) including a national treasure, "Writing Box with Pontoon Bridge." It was overwhelming to see art works including caligraphy and ceramic art by Koetsu Honami who played actively beyoud each field of art and is called "Leonard Da Vinci of Japan."

"Genji Monogatari Emaki" is displayed in spring and "Murasaki Shikibu Nikki Emaki" is displayed in autumn. For information, "Genji Monogatari Emaki" was displayed from April 29, 2014 (Tuesday, national holiday) to May 11, 2014 (Sunday). "Murasaki Shikibu Nikki Emaki" is to be displayed from October 11, 2014 (Saturday) to October 19, 2014 (Sunday).

It opened in 1960 after it was planned by Keita Goto (1882-1959) who was ex-chairman of Tokyu Railway Company. It is a small private art museum at residential area in Kaminoge, Setagaya City, Tokyo. Its nearest station is Kaminoge Station.

It is estimated that it is about 1.5 hours in a regular pace, about 1 hour in a hurried pace, and about 2 hours in a slow pace.

Opening Hour
This museum opens from 10:00 to 17:00 (last entry: 16:30).

Closed Day
This museum is closed every Monday, change of exhibition period, summer maintenance period, and year-end and new year holiday. In case that Monday is either a national holiday or a substitute holiday, it opens on Monday and closes on the following weekday.

Admissions Fee
It is different between regular exhibition and special exhibition. In case of regular exhibition, it is 1,000-yen for adults, 700-yen for high school and university students. It is free for junior high school students and under. In case of special exhibition, it is separately set.

Access
It takes about 5 minutes from Kaminoge Station of Tokyu Oimachi Line on foot. It is suggested that we take a local train, as express trains do not stop at Kaminoge Station. If this is the first time to go to the Gotoh Museum, please check the place by a map and a photo in advance.
