Japanese Garden that has 10 architectural buildings selected as Important Cultural Properties of Japan

If you visit Sankeien Garden, you can see beautiful scenery that traditional Japanese-style architectures and Japanese circuit garden are well-harmonized.

This garden is famous for plum blossoms, cherry blossoms and colored leaves. It is selected as Place of Scenic Beauty of Japan.

It consists of Inner Garden and Outer Garden. There are many historical architectures such as temples, tea houses and residential houses that are shifted from other parts of Japan including Kyoto. In particular, Rinshunkaku, Juto Oido Hall of Old Tenzuiji Temple, Gekkaden, Tenjiin, Choshukaku, Shunsoro in Inner Garden, and 3-Story Pagoda of Old Tomyoji Temple, Main Hall of Old Tomyoji Temple, Old Tokeiji Sanctum and Former Yanohara House in Outer Garden are selected as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.

The scenery of 3-Story Pagoda of Old Tomyoji Temple on top of hill and Japanese circuit garden is beautiful. Former Yanohara House that has a "Gassho-style house" with a steep thatched roof is also wonderful.

Historically, Sankei Hara (1868-1939), founder of Sankeien Garden, was business leader who traded silk, owning Tomioka Silk Mill in Gunma Prefecture in 1902 that was selected as National Treasure of Japan and World Heritage of UNESCO. Also, he not only supported artists such as Kanzan Shimomura (1873-1930) and Taikan Yokoyama (1868-1958) but also created art works such as painting and calligraphy by himself. You can find his accomplishments at Sankei Memorial Museum in this garden.

It opened in 1906. It is a large private garden at residential area in Honmoku, Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Its nearest station is Negishi station and so on.
