Branch of Edo-Tokyo Museum with wide variety of restored buildings

If you visit Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum, you can see 30 restored cultural and historical buildings.

It consists of East Zone, Central Zone and West Zone.

At East Zone, there are many old buildings including Kagiya (Japanese-style pub) (built in 1856), Kawano Shoten (Oil-paper Umbrella Wholesale Store) (built in 1926), Kodakara-yu (Pulbic Bathhouse) (built in 1929) and so on. This zone has an atmosphere of a retrospective shopping street. Also, you can find City Train Model 7500 (Street Car) (made in 1962).

At Central Zone, you can find dignified Japanese-style buildings such as House of Korekiyo Takahashi (1854-1936) (built in 1902) and Second House of the Nishikawa Family (built in 1992). These buildings have an atmosphere of prestigious family. Former Kokaden Palace (built in 1940) is now used as Visitor Center of this museum.

At West Zone, there are unique Western-style and Japanese-style buildings. You can find House of George de Lalande (1872-1914) (built around 1910), House of Koide (built in 1925), House of Kunio Maekawa (1905-1986) (built in 1942). These buildings have an atmosphere of sophisticated residential areas. In particular, there is a rich open ceiling space at the living room in House of Kunio Maekawa.

Also, there are farm buildings with thatched roofs including Farmhouse of the Tsunashima Family (built in the middle of Edo Period (1603-1867)) and Farmhouse of the Yoshino Family (built in late Edo Period (1603-1867)). These farm buildings have an atmosphere of old Japanese rural areas.

Moreover, indoor museum occasionally holds exhibitions about history in Tokyo and so on.

Opening hour can be extended for special events. The lit-up of colored leaves of autumn and buildings are held in autumn. The atmosphere of lit-up traditional buildings were fantastic (in November 2013).

It opened in 1993 as a branch of Edo-Tokyo Museum. It is a large public museum of Tokyo Metropolis at Koganei Park in Musashi Koganei, Koganei City, Tokyo. Its nearest station is Musashi-Koganei station.

For your information, Koganei Park is famous for cherry blossoms. "Koganei Sakura Festival" is held in spring. Also, it is possible to visit Tonogayato Gardens and Kodaira Hirakushi Denchu Art Museum.
