It has a history since 744. Its temple frounds consist of Main Hall, Izuna-Gongendo Hall, Niomon Gate, Daishido Hall, Okunoin Fudodo Hall and so on. After passing through Joshinmon Gate, you can go up straight 108 Steps of Stairs like Steps of Social Success of Atago Jinja Shrine and Shikyonanjizaka Slope of Ikegami Honmonji Temple. As it is located in the middle of the mountain, this temple has a different atmosphere from other temples in city area such as Sensoji Temple and Zojoji Temple.
