Villa garden that shows the beautiful scenery of Jiro-Benten Pond

If you visit Tonogayato Gardens, you can see the stereoscopic scenery of Japanese circuit garden like a round theater.

This garden is selected as Place of Scenic Beauty of Japan. In particular, you are able to look over the magnificent landscape of Jiro-Benten Pond from a tea house called "Koyo-Tei" on top of the cliff. Also, you can view the changing scenery walking around the pond, and you can look up beautiful trees and the tea house from a shore of the pond.

It is also interesting to see "Shishi-Odoshi" move and make sound, when water is filled near the tea house.

In addition to the Japanese circuit garden, you will view the pleasant open grass space with stones and trees. There are a tunnel of bush clover, a wisteria trellis, and a bamboo forest.

This garden is famous for colored leaves of autumn. The high season is around from late autumn to early winter.

Historically, Sadae Eguchi (1865-1946), a business leader, arranged this garden as a villa around 1916 during Taisho Period (1912-1926). Old Iwasaki Family used to have this garden as Tonogayato Villa in Showa Period (1926-1989), along with Kyu-Iwasaki-Tei Gardens as their main residence, Rikugien Gardens as their Komagome Villa, and Kiyosumi Gardens as their Komagome Villa.

It opened in 1979. It is a small public garden of Tokyo Metropolis at commercial area in Minami-Machi, Kokubunji City, Tokyo. Its nearest station is Kokubunji station.
