Art museum of sculpture that shows world of Fumio Asakura

If you visit Asakura Museum of Sculpture, you can know the world of Fumio Asakura (1883-1964).

He received Order of Cultural Merit of Japan as Japanese sculptor for the first time. You will be able to see not only his sculpture works but also his atelier, house and gardens. It is unique that his sculpture works are displayed in his building that he designed by himself.

The building that consists of his Western-style atelier and Japanese-style house is selected as Tangible Property of Japan. Also, the site that has old Fumio Asakura Garden is selected as Place of Scenic Beauty of Japan.

You can see his masterpieces including "Hakamori," "Shigenobu Okuma," and "Ichikawa Danjuro Ⅸ" at his atelier. Also, as he liked cats, you can look at his sculpture works of cats at Orchid Room. He created bronze sculpture works, while Denchu Hirakushi (1872-1979) mainly focused on wooden sculpture works as exhibited in Kodaira Hirakushi Denchu Art Museum.

It opened in 1967 and became a public art museum of Taito City in 1986. It is a small art museum at the residential area in Yanaka, Taito City, Tokyo. Its nearest station is Nippori Station.

For your information, you are supposed to wear socks after taking off shoes due to maintenance, when you enter this art museum.
