The Main Residence of Old Iwasaki Family

If you visit Kyu-Iwasaki-Tei Gardens, you can see Western Residence, Billiard Room and Japanese Residence.

It was the main residence of Hisaya Iwasaki (1865-1955), the 3rd President of Mitsubishi Group. Under the title of the House of Old Iwasaki Family, it is selected as Important Cultural Property of Japan. For your information, Rikugien Gardens is their Komagome villa, Kiyosumi Gardens is their Fukagawa villa and Tonogayato Gardens is their Tonogayato villa.

Josiah Conder (1852-1920) designed 2-story wooden Western Residence in 1896 during Meiji Period (1868-1912). You can see around the grass garden and the mixed forest from its balcony. On the other hand, from the south end of the lawn garden, you can see beautiful scenery of the grass garden along with Western Residence and Billiard Room.

He also designed this Billiard Room like a wooden Swiss cottage. You can see the ceiling window of the underground corridor between Billiard Room and Western Residence on the ground near Billiard Room.

In addition to Western Residence and Billiart Room, he designed Western-style House of Kyu-Furukawa Gardens and Mitsubishi Ichigokan Building that was replicated in 2009 and is now used as Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum, Tokyo.

Japanese Residence has a calm atmosphere. You can look at Mr. Fuji roughly sketched by Gaho Hashimoto (1835-1908) on the wall. It is also connected to Western Residence.

The site has a wide western lawn garden on a flat land, while you can find a few Japanese stone lanterns and the mixed forest. Also, there are the emblem of Iwasaki Family on the wall and a 400-year-old ginkgo tree.

This garden has a different atmosphere from Japanese circuit gardens such as Rikugien and Koishikawa Korakuen Gardens.

It opened in 2001. It is a middle-sized public garden of Tokyo Metropolis at commercial area in Ueno, Taito City, Tokyo. Its nearest station is Yushima station.
