The only museum in the world that has all of Japanese Art

If you visit Tokyo National Museum, you can appreciate oriental art works comprehensively.

It is an museum that shows works of oriental art. It is the flagship museum of Japan in terms of quality and quantity. It has more than 110,000 collection items including 87 National Treasures of Japan and 633 Important Cultural Properties of Japan.

It consists of Hon-Kan, Heisei-Kan, Horyuji-Houmotsu-Kan, Toyo-Kan, Kuroda-Kinen-Kan and so on. Hon-Kan shows Japanese art. Heisei-Kan shows Japanese archaelogical findings. Horyuji-Houmotsu-Kan shows dedicated treasures. Toyo-Kan shows oriental art. Kuroda-Kinen-Kan shows the masterpieces by Seiki Kuroda (1866-1924).

There are two kinds of exhibitions, Sogo-Bunka exhibition (regular exhibition) and special exhibition. Special exhibition is held at the 2nd floor of Heisei-Kan. The garden in this museum opens twice a year in spring and autumn.

You can see Japanese art works in the area of "Highlights of Japanese Art" at the 2nd floor of Hon-Kan.

It was wonderful to see "The Zen priest Ikkyu Osho. Inscription by Bokusai." that was selected as Important Cultural Property of Japan at Zen and Ink Printing corner(from May 8, 2014 (Thursday) to June 15, 2014 (Sunday)).

Also, it is overwhelming to see about 300 treasures of Horyuji Temple at Horyuji-Houmotsu-Kan. They were dedicated to imperial family in 1878. Then, they were transfered to the Japanese government in 1949.

Hyokeikan and Kuromon Gate are selected as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.

It opened in 1872. It is the oldest museum in Japan.

It is a large national museum at Ueno Onshi Park in Ueno, Taito City, Tokyo. Its nearest station is Ueno station.

For your information, in addition to Tokyo National Museum, there are Kyoto National Museum, Nara National Museum, and Kyushu National Museum.

Also, there are many cultural facilities around Tokyo National Museum in Ueno Onshi Park. You can visit The National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, The University Art Museum, Tokyo University of the Arts, The Ueno Royal Museum, National Museum of Nature and Science, Ueno Zoological GardensShitamachi Museum and so on.

Necessary Time
It is 5 hours in a regular pace, 4 hours in a hurried pace, and 6 hours in a slow pace. As it is practically difficult to see all detailed exhibits in a day, it is recommended to have flexible plans including the visit for more than 2 days to see the details or the visit for only 2 hours to see the selected displays.

Opening Hour
This museum opens from 9:30 to 17:00 (last entry: 16:30).The opening hour is extended until 20:00 (last entry: 19:30) on Friday during the special exhibition period from March 28, 2014 (Friday) to December, 2014. Also, the opening hour is extended until 18:00 (last entry: 17:30) on Saturday, Sunday, national holidays and substitute holidays from March 29, 2014 (Saturday) to December 7, 2014 (Sunday). Moreover, this museum temporarily opens.

Closed Day
Every Monday and Year-end and New Year Holiday. In case that Monday is either national holiday or substitute holiday, this museum opens on Monday and closes on the next weekday. Also, generally, it opens during golden week period from late April to early May and Obon period from August 13 to August 15. Moreover, it temporarily closes.

Admissions Fee
Between Sogo-Bunka exhibition and special exhibition, admissions fee is different. In case of Sogo-Bunka exhibition, the admissions fee is 620-yen for adults and 410-yen for university students. It is free for those under 18 (elementary school students, junior high students and high school students) and over 70. It is necessary to prove age. It is free to enter Sogo-Bunka exhibition on the 18th of May for International Museum Day and the third Monday of September for Respect for the Aged Day. In case of special exhibition, admissions fee is differnt from each other.

Access
Ueno Station of Yamanote Line, Keihin Tohoku Line and so on (JR East) is the closest from this museum. It takes about 10 minutes on foot through Ueno Park from Koenguchi Entrance Gate of Ueno Station. Also, the access is good from Ueno Station of Ginza Line (Tokyo Metro) and so on.
