Famous Park for Cherry Blossoms

If you visit Ueno Onshi Park, you can see about 710 cherry trees.

This park is one of the symbolic places about cherry blossom viewing in Japan. The high season is around from late March to early April. "Ueno Cherry Blossom Festival" is held around from late March to mid-April, while it changes year by year. You can walk through "the tunnel of cherry blossoms" between the flog fountain and the Takenodai fountain. You can also see cherry blossoms on the road between Hasu-ike Pond and Boat-ike Pond in the area of Shinobazu-no-Ike Pond.

In addition to cherry blossoms, this park is famous for lotus flowers in Shinobazu-no-Ike Pond. The high time is in the morning in summer. You can see lotus flowers from a special pier over this pond.

It is one of the central places about art culture in Japan. You can find many kinds of cultural facilities. In particular, there are many art museums: Tokyo National Museum, The National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum and The Ueno Royal Museum. Adjacent to this park, there is also The University Art Museum, Tokyo University of the Arts. Also, National Museum of Nature and Science, Ueno Zoological Gardens, Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, and Shitamachi Museum are located in this park.

Across from Tokyo National Museum, this park has is wide open space at Takenodai fountain area.

There are some monuments in this park including the statue of Takamori Saito (1828-1877) made by Koun Takamura (1852-1934), the statue of Hideyo Noguchi (1876-1928). There are also the plates of those who received the People's Honor Award of Japan including Mr. Sadaharu Oh (1940-Present), a baseball superstar, and Kiyoshi Atsumi (1928-1996), a actor who played a role on Tora-San.

Historically, the site of current Ueno Onshi Park used to be the temple grounds of Kaneiji Temple that Tenkai (1536-1643) made in 1625 during Edo Period (1603-1867). He made Kiyomizu-Kannondo Hall in 1631 as the motif of Kiyomizudera Temple in Kyoto Prefecture. Also, he considered Shinobazu-no-Ike Pond as the motif of Biwako Lake in Shiga Prefecture.

You can see some historic buildings of this temple in this park. In particular, Kiyomizu Kannondo Hall, Old Kaneiji Temple 5-Story Pagoda, and Ueno Toshogu Shrine are selected as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.

In addition to these buildings, you can look at the replicated "Tsuki-no-Matsu" Pine Tree around Kiyomizu Kannondo Hall. Hiroshige Utagawa (1797-1858) drew the original pine tree in 100 Famous Views of Edo.

There is also Bell Tower. You can hear the sound of bell three times a day: at 6:00, at 12:00, and at 18:00. This bell is famous for the haiku of Basho Matsuo (1644-1694): "Clouds of Flowers, The Sound of Bell come from Ueno, Or from Asakusa." Along with the bells at Sensoji Temple and Zojoji Temple, it is recognized as one of the major bells in Edo (Tokyo), while there are various views.

Moreover, Ueno Budda is a relief of its front face, and Huge Garden Lantern that has the height of more than 6 meters.

Ueno Onshi Park is one of the oldest parks in Japan along with some parks including Asukayama Park.

It opened in 1873. It is a large public park of Tokyo Metropolis at hilly area in Ueno, Taito City, Tokyo. Its nearest station is Ueno Station and so on.
