The zoo that Giant Pandas live

If you visit Ueno Zoological Gardens, you can see giant pandas.

At present, you can meet "Ri Ri" and "Shin Shin" at Panda House. They are very popular with their lovely faces and behaviors. It seems that giant pandas have become an icon of this zoo since Lang Lang and kang Kang came from China in 1972 as a symbol of friendship. "The panda boom" was a social event in those days. Giant pandas are still very popular now.

This zoo has Eastern Garden and Western Garden. There are about 400 kinds of animals.

At Eastern Garden, there is Panda House. Also, you may see polar bear walking and swimming at "Polar Bear and Seal Oceans." Moreover, you can meet a wide variety of animals such as tiger, elephant and monkey.

At Western Garden, you can meet African animals including giraffe, zebra, rhino, hippopotamus, and okapi at "Animals of Africa." Also, you can find flamingo and penguin. Meerkat lives in "Small Mammal House." There is a corner of lesser panda under Isoppubashi Bridge.

You can take the monorail between Eastern Garden and Western Garden. Along with Toei Subway and Toden Arakawa Line, it is run by Bureau of Transportation, Tokyo Metropolitan Government. It is the oldest monorail line in Japan that opened in 1957. Its official name is "Ueno Kensui Line."

Historically, the site of this zoo was a part of Kaneiji Temple that was built in 1625 during Edo Period (1603-1867). You can see a five-story pagoda of Old Kaneiji Temple at Eastern Garden that is selected as Important Cultural Property of Japan. It is 36-meter high. This pagoda was built in 1639. For the same reason, there are historic facilities of Kaneiji Temple such as "Kiyomizu Kannondo Hall" that is selected as Important National Property of Japan, and "Shinobazu-no-Ike Bentendo Hall."

While Tama Zoological Park has a wide open space, this zoo is compactly arranged. You can see animals from relatively closer place. Also, comparing with Inokashira Park Zoo, it seems that there are larger number of big animals at Tama Zoological Gardens and this zoo.

It opened in 1882 as the oldest zoo in Japan. It is a middle-sized public zoo of Tokyo Metropolis at Ueno Onshi Park in Ueno, Taito City, Tokyo. Its nearest station is Ueno Station.

For your information, there are many cultural facilities around Ueno Zoological Gardens in Ueno Onshi Park. You can visit Tokyo National Museum, The National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, The University Art Museum, Tokyo University of the Arts, The Ueno Royal Museum, National Museum of Nature and Science, Shitamachi Museum and so on.
